In an unprecedented move, it is offering a $1 million bounty to anyone who can identify vulnerabilities within the system. This substantial reward is part of it’s commitment to safeguarding user privacy and security, inviting security researchers and tech enthusiasts to test the strength of its infrastructure.

The Introduction of Apple Intelligence: AI Meets Apple Devices

Set to debut on the latest iPhones, Apple Intelligence is an integrated AI system offering an array of new features aimed at enhancing user experience. This new platform, set to launch with the iPhone 16, 15 Pro, and 15 Pro Max, brings innovative tools for message sorting, generative writing, and personalized emoji creation (Genmoji). Apple Intelligence is designed to operate both on-device and via a secure cloud system, with complex tasks managed by its Private Cloud Compute (PCC) servers.

With the security bounty program, Apple is challenging the public to test the resilience of PCC by attempting to hack it. This initiative not only encourages third-party verification but also reinforces its dedication to security, with rewards based on the level of vulnerability uncovered.

Security Bounty Program: Rewards for Hackers

The reward structure within Apple’s Security Bounty program varies, incentivizing different levels of vulnerability discoveries:

• Top Reward: $1 Million for anyone who can execute undetected code within PCC and access sensitive parts of the system.
• Data Access Reward: $250,000 for access to a user’s request data or any sensitive information outside of the designated “trust boundary.”
• Executing Unattested Code: $100,000 to anyone who can run “unattested” code—code requests that bypass company verification.
• Boundary Access Reward: $150,000 for gaining unauthorized access to user data outside the trust boundary.
• Exposure Reward: $50,000 for uncovering vulnerabilities that unintentionally reveal data.

Tools for Hackers: Resources for the Challenge

Apple is providing participants with essential resources to help analyze PCC, including a security guide and a virtual environment accessible within the macOS Sequoia 15.1 developer preview. Participants will need a Mac with an M-series chip and at least 16GB of RAM to access these resources.

It has also extended access to PCC to the broader public, moving beyond its prior restriction to third-party auditors only. This open invitation reinforces Apple’s confidence in its security measures while providing valuable feedback to enhance the system further.

Launch and Feature Highlights of Apple Intelligence

Upon launch, Apple Intelligence will offer users various tools, including:

• Writing Tools for proofreading and rewriting,
• Smart Replies for quick responses to messages,
• Notification Summaries and Photo Clean-Up features,
• An initial redesign of Siri to improve voice interactions.

Further updates, such as Genmoji, Image Playground, ChatGPT integration, and Visual Intelligence, are expected in iOS 18.2, which will enter beta testing soon. A fully revamped Siri will follow in 2025, highlighting Apple’s long-term vision for AI development.

A Waitlist and Language Limitations at Launch

Due to anticipated high demand, Apple Intelligence will initially operate on a waitlist. While the launch version supports only US English, Apple plans to roll out support for additional languages by December.
