NBA – Negotiations underway as Nuggets trying to retain key forward Gordon while managing salary cap of $150 Million
There’s a new turn seen in talks between The Denver Nuggets and forward Aaron Gordon about a contract extension. It seems as if they are not interested in offering him the maximum amount he could earn over four years of contract, which is around $150 million. ESPN’s Brian Windhorst recently shared this news on The Hoop Collective podcast, explaining that though Nuggets value Gordon, they try to seal the deal for less than that maximum figure.
Gordon, played a key role in the Nuggets’ 2023 NBA championship win, still has two years left on his current contract. This deal includes a player option for the 2025-26 season, which would pay him $22.8 million. In 2021, Gordon signed a four-year, $92 million extension with Denver after being traded from the Orlando Magic.
The Nuggets, that recently gave Jamal Murray a big contract extension, need to balance their finances. They have already lost important players like Bruce Brown and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, while maintaining balance in finances, they may be cautious about overspending on Gordon. However, Gordon has expressed his desire to stay with the team, mentioning that he loves the organization and hopes the extension can be completed.
While both Nuggets and Gordon are optimistic about the deal, the final terms have yet to be agreed upon. The deadline for a deal is October 21st and Denver’s season opener is on October 24th against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
