Trump Nominates Elise Stefanik as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations
President-elect Donald Trump has offered Republican Representative Elise Stefanik the role of U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, a position she has reportedly accepted. Stefanik, a staunch ally of Trump, will advance his “America First” and pro-Israel agenda at Turtle Bay. At 40 years old, she holds the No. 4 leadership position among House Republicans and has been a prominent supporter of Trump, participating in his 2020 impeachment defense and objecting to certifying Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory.
Trump Praises Stefanik’s Leadership
Trump expressed confidence in Stefanik, calling her a “strong, tough, and smart America First fighter” in a statement to the New York Post. He highlighted her significant role in his political successes and recent GOP fundraising efforts. “I am honored to nominate Chairwoman Elise Stefanik to serve in my Cabinet,” he stated, emphasizing her unwavering dedication to his administration’s principles.

Stefanik’s Response to the Nomination
Stefanik confirmed her nomination, expressing deep gratitude and excitement. “I am truly honored to earn President Trump’s nomination to serve in his Cabinet,” she said. She added that she looks forward to earning Senate approval and stressed the importance of demanding accountability from global allies. Stefanik also shared her optimism for America’s future, emphasizing Trump’s influence and the potential for brighter days.

From Moderate Beginnings to Trump Defender
Despite her current alignment with Trump, Stefanik’s early congressional career was marked by more moderate stances. She opposed Trump’s 2017 tax plan and earned recognition from former House Speaker Paul Ryan, who praised her independent approach. Over time, however, Stefanik evolved into one of Trump’s staunchest defenders. This transition was driven, in part, by Trump’s widespread popularity in her upstate New York district. Her support solidified her role in the GOP, culminating in her replacement of Liz Cheney as GOP Conference Chair in 2021.
Trump Assembles His Second Administration
As Trump prepares for his second term, he continues to make key staffing decisions. He clarified that former allies like Nikki Haley, who previously served as U.N. Ambassador, will not return. Haley’s criticism and a contentious primary campaign against Trump likely influenced this decision. Meanwhile, Trump is meeting with other potential appointees, such as investor Scott Bessent, who is rumored to be a candidate for Treasury Secretary.
